Canberra College Students start their "Big Picture" journey

LYH in partnership with the Student to Industry Program (SIP) and Canberra College have embarked on a pilot "Big Picture" Project aimed at designing a personalised learning plan for each student.  Part of their journey will take place at LYH.  So far students have built a small scale aquaponics system and will be learning how to manage the fish and the horticultural crops over the coming spring and summer.

Woodcraft Guild helps ACT Youth,  The ACT Woodcraft Guild located at LYH has started a new program working with six year eight students from Campbell High School and Caroline Chisholm High School aiming to pass on some of their extensive skills and enspire a new generation of woodworkers.  This project is also being supported by the Student to Industry Adopt a School Program.

Turnaround, SPICE and the Student to Industry Program will be embarking on a pilot project to involve a number of students in on-farm work experience where they will get to work with the LYH cattle project as well as involve themselves in everyday farming activities like fencing and maintenance.  Students will also get to take part in our "Trees in Trouble" program and erect tree guards to protect them from stock damage.

LYH receives $75,000 US for dormitory
Lions Youth Haven is happy to report that they have been successful in their bid to Lions Club Internationial Foundation for funds to support the building of a dormitory at the farm.  These funds will be added to those donated by the ACT Government in 2008 as well as significant funding donated by local Lions Club in the ACT and Region.  The dormitory will provide short term residential accomodation for variety of schools and organisations working with disadvantaged youth.

The 2009 Lions Youth Haven Golf day

Run by the Lions Club of Canberra-Kambah on Friday 16th of October with all proceeds going to support the building of the dormitory at LYH.

ACT Environment Grants supports "Trees in Trouble"

LYH is happy to report that a recent submission to the ACT Environment Grants to support LYH in the construction of 30 tree guards to protect important local Yellow Box and Red Gum trees from damage by stock has been successful.  This grant will allow LYH to engage youth in meaningful construction activity whilst at the same time protecting these iconic trees both on the LYH farm and other properties in the ACT
